Munich, April 18 – On Tuesday it was announced that WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (24-0-0) had pulled out of his fourth world title defence against Robin Krasniqi (37-2-0) of Kosovo.

Unbeaten Cleverly blamed a viral infection for his decision which promotes Billy Joe Saunders’ fight with Tony Hill from undercard to headliner at The Royal Albert Hall in London.

“I’ve been unable to train because I’ve been laid up in bed with a viral infection and there has not enough time to make up what I’ve missed in training to make sure I’m fully fit” explained Cleverly.

It’s devastating news for the German based challenger whose surprise shot at a world title will now have to wait a bit longer.  It’s unclear whether Cleverly will reschedule with Krasniqi or be forced by the WBO to take on Dmitry Sukhotsky, their mandatory challenger next.

“It’s a big shame,” said a representative from Krasniqi’s management team to Sport Eagle.  “Robin is in great shape and wants to be world champion.  At the moment we don’t know when Robin will fight next or against whom.”

One thing we do know is that there are plenty of good boxers out there and they all want a shot at the top prize.  Krasniqi is the highest ranked of four Germans in the WBO’s top 10 list.  Eduard Gutknecht, Juergen Braehmer and Karo Murat are all hungry for a world title.
