EHC Red Bull München beat Straubing for first win

Oympic Ice Stadium, October 2 – Klaus Kathan’s short-handed goal in the third period gave EHC Red Bull München a lead against Bavarian rivals the Straubing Tigers on Tuesday, and Mike Kompon iced the 3-1 victory with another goal minutes later as Munich earned the their first victory of the season.

Goaltender Jochen Reimer stopped 21 of 22 shots as his steady play between the pipes was the difference in this hard fought hockey derby game.

The first period ended 0-0 as the team’s tried to establish some offensive consistency.  Reimer’s counterpart, the Tigers’ Jason Bacashihua was also keeping a clean sheet and turning away the shots.

German international and Munich co-captain Martin Buchwieser started the scoring in the second period when he broke away from the defense to beat Bacashishua.  1-0 EHC at the 15:14 mark.

A little over two and a half minutes later, Straubing’s Michael Endrass beat Reimer to even the game 1-1 at 17:54.

Towards the end of the period, things got heated, as one should expect a neighborly battle.  EHC’s Ulrich Maurer received a 20 minute major misconduct penalty for high-sticking.  This led to some pushing and shoving on the ice but fortunately no further fights.

In the final period, the Tigers turned over the puck deep in their territory, Kathan pounced on it, and shot it past the goalie, and Munich were on their way. 2-1 only 3:21 in.  That was the killer for Straubing, giving up the short-handed goal.  Kompon scored at the 14:07 mark and EHC earned the points.
