DEL Playoffs Update

Scoreboard from Sunday, March 25th

March 26 – James Sharrow and Julian Talbot each scored a goal and dished out an assist during a 90-second, 3-goal explosion during the middle of the 2nd period as the top-ranked Berlin Polar Bears beat the Cologne Sharks and took a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven quarterfinal matchup in the DEL Playoffs.

After Jason Jaspers scored a power-play goal to give the visiting Sharks the lead, Tyson Mulock evened the game after taking Sharrow’s assist and scored at the 12:50 mark.  A mere 30 seconds later, Sharrow scored his second goal of the series past Cologne’s goaltender Danny Aus den Birken thanks to Talbot’s assist.

Forty seconds later, the Sharks’ Moritz Müller was sent to the penalty box for tripping, and Talbot iced the game with a power-play goal.  Berlin can look forward to sweeping the series with a win on Wednesday in Cologne and move into the semifinals.

The second-ranked ERC Ingolstadt are also in control of their series after a pulsating 3-2 overtime win against the DEG Metro Stars from Dusseldorf.  Thomas Greilinger scored two goals, including the game winner, a power-play goal 8:44 into the extra period.  That capped a comeback after the Stars scored two goals in the 2nd period – a shorthanded goal by Evan Kaufmann and then a power play goal by Andrew Hedlund – to take a 2-1 lead.  Joseph Motzko tied the game in the final period with his for second goal of the series for Ingolstadt and the game went into overtime to set up Greilinger’s heroics.

The biggest surprise of the playoffs so far is the Straubing Tigers taking a 3-0 series lead over Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg.  The Tigers are the sixth-ranked team in the playoffs and have jumped out to early leads in all the games against 3rd ranked Wolfsburg, who have only managed single goals in the final period and have been outplayed by the Bavarians.  The Tigers are also looking to qualify early for the semifinals when they return to Straubing Ice Stadium on Wednesday.

In the final match up, the Hamburg Freezers lost the first two games to the Mannheim Eagles by a combined score 12-1.  Their playoff future looked bleak after being down 1-0 in Game 3, but Patrick Traverse scored a power-play goal before the end of the first period and assisted Serge Aubin in the 2nd period to give the port city a chance to believe, heading home only down 2-1.
