Bundesliga 2nd Division 1860 Munich vs. F.C. Hansa Rostock

Allianz Arena, Munich, March 31 – Lowly Hansa Rostock have now recorded an astonishing double victory over TSV 1860 München.  The loss ends any chance that the Lions had to return to the top flight of the Bundesliga.

The bottom club in the Bundesliga second division did nothing special.  Like most teams that have come away from the Bavarian capital with a point or three, they played a cautious first half, got the Lions in a panic and then allowed the hosts to defeat themselves.

In all honesty the goal was a lucky one and all 17,700 fans that saw it should agree.  It came after a goalless first half of terribly boring football by both sides.  When the game appeared to be heading for a draw with 10 minutes left to play and after both sides had executed all three of their permitted substitutions.

Hansa got the breakthrough with a goal credited to Freddy Borg.  Some sublime work on the Hansa left by Michael Blum provided a chance for substitute Borg to sneak the ball in at the near post.  In fact, Lions’ goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly got down to it but couldn’t prevent it from hitting the post and creeping over the line off his back.

It’s hard to say Rostock deserved it but equally 1860 didn’t do anything to earn a point against the north coast strugglers who are still favorites for relegation.
