Audi Dome, Munich – Sports fans in Germany who are late to the game of basketball have another opportunity to catch up on Sunday.

Three-time defending BEKO Basketball Bundesliga champions Brose Baskets travel south for a bit of revenge against FC Bayern Basketball in the latest edition of a Bavarian derby.  Tip-off is Sunday at 13:15 CET on national TV.

Bayern Basketball are only in their second season in the top flight of German professional basketball but the team’s success and the club’s brand name have anointed them as flag bearers for the league, evidenced by their games consistently in the spotlight.  The first game between Bamberg and Munich was also on national TV.

In Part One of our interview, FC Bayern Basketball President Marko Pešić spoke with us about the current state of Bayern Basketball, discussing the club’s rise and the future of his father continuing as head coach.  With the big game on Sunday, Pešić continues in Part Two discussing the team’s place at the top with the Brose Baskets and their role in the development of the game in the country.

The game against Bamberg was always going to be the highlight of the season, pitting the most successful club in German basketball against the biggest name in German sports.  Their connection continues with their former head coaches.  Former national coach Dirk Bauermann helped build the Brose Baskets into what they are now, and then helped Bayern during their promotion campaign in the 2010-11 season and led them to the playoffs last year.  Current head coach Chris Fleming worked under Bauermann and has led the team to a three-peat in both the league and cup competitions, and to the Euroleague.

There is extra meaning on Sunday, as both clubs top the league standings, Brose in first place with a 21-2 record, Bayern 16-8 are in second.  Under Svetislav Pešić, Bayern Basketball have won 11 of their last 13 in the league.  Bamberg continue their domination in the league despite struggling in the Euroleague Top 16.

Coming into this season, Brose won the domestic double three years in a row.  Back on February 7th, Bayern Basketball defeated the Baskets 77-69 in the BBL Cup competition and will now play in the Top Four in Berlin at the end of next month.  There’s no doubt there will be a measure of revenge on the Baskets’ minds, along with reminding the entire nation, the road to the league title still goes through Bamberg.
