Munich – Svetislav Pesic was officially announced as the new head coach of FC Bayern Basketball at a press conference Tuesday afternoon at the Audi Dome.

Bayern make the change after a 5-5 start to the 2012-13 season with Yannis Christopoulos as the head coach.  He replaced Dirk Bauermann only days before the beginning of the season.  Bauermann was relieved of his duties after the club felt he had lost his control of the team.

On Saturday night, Bayern lost 78-73 to the New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig, a team who had only won two games to start the season.  After only losing one game at home during the regular season in 2011-2012, FCB have already lost three at home.

Pesic was under a one-year contract as the head coach of the German National Basketball team, who guided the team to a perfect record during qualification for Eurobasket 2013, to be held this coming summer in Slovenia.  The German Basketball Federation (DBB) released a statement that they were aware of the situation that he was going to decide whether to remain as the national coach, or choose a club.  The DBB are currently searching for his replacement.

The Bayern Basketball team was given full support by the football/soccer club, its members and its sponsors two and a half years ago to reach the highest level of both German and European basketball.  President Uli Hoeness hired former national coach, four-time Coach of the Year and nine-time German league champion Bauermann.  He led the team to promotion from the ProA, the second league, to the Basketball Bundesliga, Germany’s version of the NBA.  Last season, the team reached the playoffs and despite high expectations, were knocked out in the first round.

This season started with promise, Bayern were penciled in for the playoffs until days before the season, Bauermann was relieved of his duties and Christopoulos was named head coach.  The drama surrounding the move was an obvious distraction as the Bayern were upset at home and now have struggled to regain the kind of play team management and the fans have come to expect.

Bayern Basketball travel to the German capital city to take on ALBA Berlin on Sunday and return home for Pesic’s home debut as coach on December 9th vs. the Telekom Baskets from Bonn.
