Audi Dome, Munich, March 18 – Jonathan Wallace scored 19 points and Chevon Troutman notched his fifth double-double of the season, adding 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, as FC Bayern Basketball beat the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg 72-62 for a Bavarian derby win in the Beko BBL.

Both teams came out playing intense defense, struggling to find any offensive rhythm in the opening minutes.  It was back-and-forth, the Baskets able to take a 16-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Bayern turned things around in the second quarter, scoring points and making defensive stops.  Munich went on a 17-1 run to build a lead that they would not lose.  Captain Steffen Hamann exemplified the focus of the team drawing offensive fouls that pumped up both his team and the crowd.  Three-pointers by Troutman, Robin Benzing and Wallace built up a 15-point lead.  Würzburg scored its first bucket in the quarter with 27 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 36-25 heading into the halftime break.

The Baskets continued to struggle offensively at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and Bayern took full advantage, going on another run, a 14-5 offensive spurt to lead 50-30.  Once again it was Wallace and Troutman leading the way, both hitting from beyond the arc.  s.Oliver’s Ricky Harris went on a personal run, scoring 7 points to help give his team a chance, cutting the Munich lead to 56-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.

But the Bayern defense was stubborn, not allowing Würzburg to get into a rhythm.  The Baskets did finish on a 19-7 run but Je’Kel Foster’s three-pointer with 1:52 left ended all hopes the visitors had for a comeback.

Harris was the only visiting player in double figures, scoring 13 points.  Bayern center Homan finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, his fifth double-double as well.  He added 3 blocked shots as part of his defensive effort.

Bayern’s 5th consecutive win brings their record to 17-11, same as Würzburg, but in head-to-head competitions, Munich holds a one-point differential (lost by 9, won by 10) and thus they move past to 5th in the league standings.

The Beko BBL takes a short break as the Brose Baskets, ratiopharm ulm, the New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig, and host Telekom Baskets Bonn finish off the Champions Cup tournament, and the Artland Dragons catch up on league games after their European schedule.  s.Oliver returns to action on March 31st as they host the Bremerhaven Polar Bears, while Bayern Basketball visit ALBA BERLIN.
