For German basketball fans, the season gets serious now.  The Brose Baskets and ALBA Berlin are battling each other in the Euroleague and the BEKO BBL.  ratiopharm ulm are also playing in an international competition, the Eurocup.  But last year’s finalists have to turn their attention to the league and the hard-charging FC Bayern Basketball for a Bavarian Derby Sunday night.

Bayern come in on a seven-game win streak, tied in the standings with Ulm at 12-6.  But due to tie-breaking scenarios, Ulm are in second place (EWE Baskets of Oldenburg are also 12-6, Ulm’s sweep of the Baskets, who in turn beat Munich on opening night).  A Bayern win will give not only extend the win streak but give them an advantage over Ulm heading towards the playoffs.  Munich escaped with an 80-78 win back on January 5th and a sweep of the season series will help come seeding time.

ratiopharm ulm are once again near the top of the league, hoping to return to the Finals where they were swept at the end of last season by Bamberg.  All-Stars John Bryant (16.8 ppg / 9.9 rpg) and Per Günther (12.2 ppg) lead Ulm’s attack, and both played well during last weekend’s All Star Day.  Additional scoring punch comes from shooting guard Allan Ray, averaging 11.4 ppg.  He scored 17 points in the loss against Bayern.

Ulm are 4-2 in their last 6 games, and only 5-3 at home so far this season.  To be fair, Ulm’s European schedule is taking a toll on the club, but they are a close knit club who are able to rise to the occasion.  And they’ll have to protect their home court against Bayern, who are enjoying a bit of luck, playing five of their games during their win streak at home.  Since their promotion to the top flight, they struggle on the road, finding different ways to lose.  A great example of that was back on January 4, 2012, in Ulm.

Bayern suffered through a mediocre start and have turned things around under European coaching legend Svetislav Pešić.  After losing his debut at Berlin, the team has not lost since.  Chevon Troutman is the leading scorer so far this season with 13.2 ppg, right behind is first-year player Tyrese Rice with 13.1 ppg.  Robin Benzing has stepped it up for the club, scoring in double figures six times during the win streak.

Tip-off is Sunday at 19:05 and the game can be seen on German national TV or online at www.Beko-BBL.de
