Audi Dome, Munich – For the Pešić Family, basketball is life.  And right now, life is good.

FC Bayern Basketball have made their organization a family affair that has stabilized the club and made it a rising power in German professional basketball.

Back in 2011-12, Bayern’s first season in the BEKO Basketball Bundesliga, the club appointed former German national player Marko Pešić the sporting director of the club.  Under his leadership, the club made the playoffs in the first year.  Despite the early exit from what was to be a promising postseason run, hopes were high coming into this season.

However, the coach that led the club from the second division into the top flight, Dirk Bauermann was relieved of his duties shortly before the season.  His replacement, Yannis Christopoulos led the team to a 5-5 start, with news just as much off the court as on.

Faced with a major decision, Marko decided to make one more change, replacing Christopoulos with his father, European basketball coaching legend, Svetislav Pešić back on November 27, 2012.  After losing their first game at ALBA Berlin under their new coach, Bayern Basketball have won 11 of their last 13 in the league to sit second in the standings.

The team also qualified for the league cup tournament and upset the three-time defending cup champions Brose Baskets in Bamberg in the first game.  Bayern Basketball will now play in the Top Four in Berlin at the end of next month.

Marko spoke with us about the current state of Bayern Basketball.  In Part One, he discusses the club’s rise and the future of his father continuing as head coach.
